SPANISH EDUCATION SYSTEM / PRIVATE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS

If you are relocating to Moraira/Costa Blanca North and you have children it is important, as every parent knows, for their child to be in a school environment in which they feel happy and so able to learn. Parents can choose from the Spanish Education System or a Private International School.

The Spanish education system is split into 5 sectors:

1)   Pre- school. Age 3-6 years.
2)   Primary. Age 6 - 12 years.
3)   Secondary. Age 12 - 16 years.
4)   Higher Secondary. Age 16 - 18 years.
5)   University. Age 18 years+

Education is compulsory in Spain for children aged 6-16. Despite children not officially starting school until they are 6 many start pre-school at 3. The pre-school is often linked to the local primary school and gives the children stability from pre to primary education. Pre-school education is free but they normally charge for meals.

In Spanish schools parents have to pay for books and supply pens and pencils. You will be given a list of what your child needs at the beginning of term, although children at Spanish schools do not wear uniform. Class sizes are much smaller in the Spanish schools, they average 15 children. In the Valencian region many schools teach in the local language, Valenciano alongside Spanish (Castilian). English is taught as a second language along with a choice of others.

International Education

These schools are privately run so they are fee paying, although the fees are considerably less than the private schools in UK. Books etc are free and uniforms are not worn. International schools that are members of the NABSS (National Association of British Schools in Spain) are approved by British school inspectors. There are also many other foreign speaking schools, French German etc. There is a good mixture of nationalities at the international schools. Food is normally included; transport is available but is charged.
