Health & Education

I have already alluded to the high quality of medical facilities and treatments in our particular area of Spain. Suffice it to say that there must be a centre of excellence for all fields of medical speciality of the highest level, between Alicante and Valencia, with most consultations, treatments and operations being available within about thirty minutes drive. To augment this, we strongly recommend membership of ‘Amigos Europeos de Javea’, a very low-cost emergency ambulance service where you pre-register your address for home emergencies, as well as any car based incident. We would also be pleased to suggest several excellent sources of medical health cover, best suited to life in Spain. In the event of major health issues, both Linda and I have found the diagnosis, referral and treatments – including operations – to be speedy and efficient. There is a huge choice of both British and other English speaking doctors, specialists and dentists in our locality. Again, we shall be happy to recommend and introduce you to those best suited to your requirements.

In terms of local schooling, whilst we do not have direct experience, we have heard many positive reports from parents and their children on the basis of their experiences. The interests of the growing number of ex-pat younger children seem best served with integration into local primary schools where they seem to soak-up a working knowledge of half a dozen languages within a year or two. Older children who have developed a good knowledge of Spanish can continue through the Spanish system, through to universities such as Alicante or Valencia, or they can transfer to either of the two main international schools in Javea or Lliber in the Jalon Valley. The Javea International College is currently in the process of building a new state-of-the-art facility in Moraira. As with the local health services, the schooling system is much as it used to be in the UK in terms of discipline, curriculum and general standards of teaching. Again, more specific advice can be provided at a later stage, on request. Meanwhile, I shall report on developments regarding the new college in Moraira at regular intervals within my ‘Journal’ pages, later in this website. It is also worth mentioning here that many extra- curricular activities are sponsored and arranged by various local authorities for children such as the ‘Escola D’Estiu’ A summer holiday course of sailing instruction, which was enjoyed by over 200 children in Javea this last summer.
